How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Company in 2026 (The Real GEO Playbook)

How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Company in 2026

Ask a friend for a contractor recommendation today, and chances are they didn’t pull out the Yellow Pages. They didn’t even Google it.

They asked ChatGPT.

The way buyers find businesses has shifted faster than most marketing playbooks have caught up. A homeowner researching “best roofers in Cumming, GA” used to scroll through Google’s local pack. Today, that same homeowner is just as likely to type the question into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Mode — and let the AI hand them a shortlist of three companies.

If your business isn’t on that shortlist, you’re invisible.

This is the question every business owner should be asking right now: How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my company?

The answer has a name. It’s called GEO — and it’s not a new tactic to bolt onto your existing SEO. It’s the next chapter of it.

What Is GEO (and Why It Matters in 2026)

GEO — short for Generative Engine Optimization (sometimes written as GSEO or Generative Search Engine Optimization) — is the practice of structuring and optimizing your online content so that generative AI tools and chatbots like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews understand it, choose it, and cite it as a source in their answers.

Translation: GEO is what gets your business name into the AI’s response when someone asks the AI for a recommendation.

It’s not a replacement for SEO. It’s an evolution of it. Traditional SEO got you on page one. GEO gets you into the AI’s answer — which, increasingly, is page one.

💡 JEFF’S TAKE

We’re already seeing the shift in our clients’ inbound calls. One home services client in metro Atlanta watched their inbound calls move from “I found you on Google” to “ChatGPT recommended you” over the course of about six months. That’s not a future trend — that’s a 2026 reality. If you’re not optimizing for AI recommendation today, you’re letting your competitors collect the calls you used to get.

How ChatGPT Actually Decides Who to Recommend

How ChatGPT Actually Decides Who to Recommend

Before you can optimize for ChatGPT, you have to understand how it forms its recommendations. There’s no single ranking algorithm like Google’s. Instead, ChatGPT pulls from a few different layers working together:

1. Its Training Data

ChatGPT has absorbed a huge slice of the public web — articles, reviews, forums, business directories, news sites, and more. If your company has been mentioned consistently across the web for years, that mention pattern is already baked in.

2. Live Web Search

When a user has search turned on (or is using ChatGPT Search), the model runs real-time web queries and pulls fresh content into the answer. This is where current rankings, fresh reviews, and recent press coverage come into play.

3. Citation-Worthy Sources

ChatGPT prefers to pull from sources that are clean, structured, and authoritative — Wikipedia, established industry publications, Reddit threads with high engagement, well-reviewed business listings, and trustworthy company pages with clear authorship.

4. Pattern Matching

If ten different sources mention your company as a top-rated provider in your category, ChatGPT notices that pattern and weights you accordingly. One great page on your own site is not enough. You need a footprint.

🔍 Why This Matters for Your Business
  1. You can’t “rank #1” in ChatGPT the way you do in Google. You earn your way in through breadth of mention.
  2. Reviews on third-party sites carry as much weight as content on your own.
  3. Being talked about matters more than what you say about yourself.
  4. A single great page won’t get you cited. A consistent presence across the web will.

The 7 Strategies That Actually Get ChatGPT to Recommend You

1. Build a Mention Footprint Across Trusted Sources

The single biggest factor in whether ChatGPT recommends your business is how often — and where — your name shows up across the open web. Industry directories, niche publications, Reddit discussions, local news features, podcast appearances, and well-known blog roundups all feed into the pattern AI sees.

This is digital PR — but with a specific goal. You’re not chasing backlinks for Google. You’re seeding mentions for AI.

2. Get Featured in “Best Of” Lists

When a user asks ChatGPT, “What are the top SEO companies in Atlanta?” the AI is essentially synthesizing the listicles already published online. Pitch yourself to journalists, niche publishers, and industry round-up writers. Every credible “Top 10” article that includes your business raises your AI visibility.

3. Optimize Your Site for Citation, Not Just Ranking

ChatGPT favors content that’s easy to extract, attribute, and quote. That means:

  • Clear headings that match question phrasing (“What does an SEO audit include?”)
  • Direct answers in the first sentence of each section — don’t bury the lead
  • Specific data points the AI can quote (numbers, percentages, dates)
  • Author bylines with verifiable expertise and credentials

4. Get Reviewed Everywhere That Matters

Reviews are some of the highest-trust signals AI pulls from. Google Business Profile, Yelp, Trustpilot, BBB, Clutch, G2, industry-specific platforms — they all matter. ChatGPT often pulls review language nearly verbatim into its recommendations.

5. Strengthen Your Wikipedia and Knowledge Graph Presence

If your business is large or notable enough to qualify for a Wikipedia page, work toward earning one the right way — through real third-party coverage, not self-published listings. Wikipedia is one of the most-trusted training sources for nearly every generative AI on the market.

For smaller businesses, focus on Google’s Knowledge Graph — verified business listings, schema markup, and consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) data across the web.

6. Use Schema Markup to Spell It Out

Structured data tells AI what your page is about in a language it doesn’t have to guess. Use Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and Review schema on your key pages. The clearer the machine-readable signals, the more confidently AI can cite you.

7. Publish Genuine, First-Hand Expertise

ChatGPT — like Google — is increasingly trained to detect and reward original expertise. Generic listicles (“10 Tips for Choosing a Plumber”) rarely get cited. Case studies, before-and-afters, “how we solved this for a real client” posts, and original data do.

If you’ve solved a hard problem for a client, write about it. That’s the content AI is built to surface.

💡 JEFF’S TAKE

Here’s a real example from our own client work: search ChatGPT for “top weight loss surgeons in Tijuana” and our clients show up in the top 3 results — ahead of dozens of competitors who’ve been in that market longer. That didn’t happen by accident. It happened because we built their mention footprint, earned them citations on the right sources, and published the kind of first-hand expertise content AI is built to surface. That’s the GEO bar in 2026 — specific, story-driven content backed by a real reputation across the web. Most agencies haven’t told their clients yet.

What Doesn’t Work for ChatGPT Visibility

Some of the advice floating around about “getting your business into ChatGPT” is junk. Save your time and skip these:

❌ Stuffing your homepage with AI-friendly keywords. ChatGPT doesn’t index keyword density. It reads context.

❌ Adding an llms.txt file to your site. Google has publicly confirmed it does not use this file, and there’s no evidence ChatGPT does either.

❌ Buying mentions on low-quality PBN blogs. Low-trust sources don’t make it into AI training data with any weight, and they actively hurt your traditional SEO.

❌ Hyper-optimizing for one specific “ChatGPT prompt.” You can’t game a single query. You can only build a footprint that wins across many variations.

❌ Spamming Reddit with self-promotion. Reddit is a strong AI signal — but only authentic, upvoted, community-trusted content gets pulled in. Self-promotion gets buried.

How to Measure if ChatGPT Is Recommending You

You can’t track AI recommendations the same way you track Google rankings — there’s no Search Console for ChatGPT. But you can build a simple monitoring routine that gives you real visibility into where you stand.

🔍 How to Track AI Visibility
  1. Run prompt tests monthly. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini the queries your customers actually ask (“best [your service] in [your city]”). Document who gets named — including you.
  2. Watch for referrer traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, and other AI tools inside Google Analytics.
  3. Track branded search volume. A steady rise often signals AI exposure even when the AI doesn’t send a click directly.
  4. Ask new customers, “How did you hear about us?” and add “ChatGPT / AI tool” as an answer option on intake forms.
  5. Monitor brand mentions across the web using a tool like Brand24, Mention, or Google Alerts. These mentions feed the AI’s pattern matching.

A 90-Day GEO Action Plan

A 90-Day GEO Action Plan

If you want a starting point, here’s the plan we walk clients through:

  1. Audit your current mention footprint. Where does your brand show up? Where doesn’t it? List 20 target sources where you should be mentioned but aren’t.
  2. Get reviews flowing. Set up a process to ask every happy client for a review on Google, one general platform (Yelp or BBB), and one industry-specific platform.
  3. Add or upgrade schema markup. At minimum: Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and Review schema on your key pages.
  4. Publish three first-hand expertise pieces. Real case studies, real data, real stories — not listicles.
  5. Pitch into at least one “best of” article. Find journalists and niche publishers covering your space and offer them genuine value.
  6. Set a monthly AI visibility check. Run the same five prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini each month. Track whether you’re named — and which competitors are.

Final Thoughts

ChatGPT didn’t replace Google — it sits next to it as a second front door to your business. And the businesses that win on that front door are the ones who stop chasing the next acronym and start building real reputation across the web.

GEO isn’t a parlor trick. It’s the long game of being genuinely findable, genuinely reviewed, and genuinely worth recommending — at a level AI can verify across dozens of independent sources.

If you do the work, ChatGPT will start naming you. If you don’t, it will name your competitors.
